Do you think you may have an STI?

STI testing is essential for protecting your reproductive health and preventing transmission. STIs don’t always have signs or symptoms, so it’s imperative to get tested regularly.

What Are STIs?

STIs typically pass through sexual activity and bodily fluids. A pregnant woman can also pass an STI to her baby through pregnancy and childbirth. STI testing is critical for those who are sexually active and ensures early detection and proper treatment.

Untreated STIs can lead to health complications like heart disease, infertility, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

Do I Have An STI?

Not all STIs display signs or symptoms, but they are possible and can include:

  • Painful urination
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Sore, swollen lymph nodes
  • Unusual discharge

While anyone sexually active can develop an STI, certain risk factors increase your chances:

  • Having a history of STIs
  • Having many sexual partners
  • Misusing alcohol or using recreational drugs
  • Injecting drugs
  • Having unprotected sexual intercourse
  • Being a young person aged 15-24
  • Being forced to engage in sexual activity

Common STIs

Chlamydia is a very common bacterial STI. This bacterial infection is easily identified with STI testing and can be effectively treated with antibiotics.

Gonorrhea is another bacterial STI that can typically be treated with antibiotics. With this STI, the bacteria has already started developing resistance to treatment drugs, so treatment will require more follow-up to ensure it’s completely gone.
